TAAH at Art Dubai 2023

The African Art Hub attended Art Dubai held at Jumeirah Madinat, Dubai, UAE between the 1-5 of March 2023. The fair hosted over 130 artists from six continents, including 30 first-time participants and was arranged  across four sections: Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Art Dubai Digital. Known as an incubator of talent, the fair had one of the strongest-ever gallery line-ups.

The general aura of the fair was characterised by well-curated  booths with a definite sense of emancipation. Navigating through the exhibition halls, TAAH noticed an impressive representation of African art. Much of the latter was themed on limitations and fluidity between body, mind and soul, social and identity politics, and the politics of spaces.  There was a wonderful array of styles, from the intricate calligraphy of Tunisian artist Mohammed Kilani Tbib to Ghanaian Artist Kwesi Botchway’s blended style of French impressionism and African realism into fascinating figurative compositions.  The outstanding works of Cameroonian Artist Pascale Marthine Tayou, who incorporates fragile materials like chalk sticks in repeated beautiful patterns and Alexis Peskin’s skilfully rendered hammering nails of different gauges depict visually beguiling figures that portray strength and perseverance.

Throughout the Art fair, TAAH’s team cultivated an exchange of ideas and contacts between collectors, artists, and art professionals. Warmly received and with many avenues for future prospects, the fair was a success with regards to the agency's ethos of creating opportunities for artists to present their works to an international audience  and showcase their talent.
